Freeland Spirits

Interior Build-out and Environmental Graphics for Freeland Spirits in Portland Oregon.

Role: Lead Design Interiors and Project Management for Open Studio Collective.

Completed summer 2018

Photographs by Vic Garcia

While at Open Studio Collective, I collaborated on a multi-disciplinary team to create a uniquely refined tasting room for Freeland Spirits, one of the few woman-owned distilleries in history. To tell the Freeland Spirits’ story, we developed subtle details for a tactile and olfactory experience: custom wheat-inspired wallpaper designed in-house, custom shelving units designed to display the distillery’s iconic glass bottles and jars filled with botanicals used in the distilling process, and copper detailing throughout the tasting room to reference the massive copper stills in full view behind the bar. We were fortunate to collaborate with many local women-owned businesses on this project: Fieldwork Flowers, to develop the plant installation, and with Fruit Salad Club, to create a custom mural that illustrates the story and process of Freeland Spirits.

Every design in the space goes back to brand, whether it is the story of the founders, the bottle design, or the way the liquor is made, or the liquor itself. It was important to have every decision relate back to the brand story. The base of the bar is clad with copper sawtooth detailing inspired by the wheat the gin is made from the still that it is made in.

Custom shelving with a sensory display of the botanicals Freeland Sprits Gin is infused with. Layered behind is a wallpaper designed specifically for the project with an abstract wheat pattern, printed on a copper substrate.

On the side of the building, the Oregon State Motto, “She flies with her own wings” is painted to represent the Women who founded this distillery and celebrate the Oregon where they source their ingredients from.
