Sit Still Kids Salon

Interior build-out and franchise design intent for Sit Still Kids Salon in Portland, Oregon.

Role: Design Lead, Project Management for Open Studio Collective.

Completed 2019

We were brought on by the owners of Sit Still Kids to re-imagine what a kids hair salon experience could be, both for the kids and parents. We approached this design challenge thinking about what would appeal to parents and kids alike. First tackling the chairs, designing custom bent metal cars that have wood accents and a retro feel, with playful graphics that are interchangeable. Since the ultimate goal was to franchise the salon we wanted to design a floor plan that could mold to any space, creating a central station area so it was the focal point, and having modular design for the retail and reception area. The casework was kept simple and clean to be able to be produced across states and have a timeless yet modern feel, with rounded edges and dowel accents throughout.

We wanted to include soft and playful details. Half rounds line the reception desk making a unique texture. This detail is carried out in the counter edges throughout. Closed storage and retail display are integrated throughout.

In every salon a custom painted mural is behind the stadium seating, that doubles as toy storage. We wanted this to be a focal point of the space, where color and the kids really shine, doubling as backdrop for the kids to take photos after they get their cut and style. Having this area be different in each franchise location, allows for customization to make the salon more specific to its place.
